CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — An 18-wheeler jackknifed on the westbound South Padre Island Drive access road at around noon on Tuesday.

Corpus Christi Police Department Officer S. Barnes said an 18-wheeler veered off of the freeway onto the SPID frontage road after being involved in a minor collision with a Toyota Camry.

"We don't know exactly what happened exactly happened after that because we couldn't interview the 18-wheeler driver," Barnes said. Barnes said the 18-wheeler was disoriented and was taken to the hospital.

The tractor-trailer then crashed into a light pole in front of the Ed Hicks Pre-Owned car dealership in the 3300 block of SPID.

The truck's load was empty, and the driver of the Camry was not injured. Barnes said the Camry looked as if the initial encounter on the freeway had been a sideswipe.

Corpus Christi Fire Department was called out to clean up diesel fuel spilled onto the road in the accident.

Barnes said it was fortunate more vehicles weren't involved in the accident.

"I gotta say," he said, "Ed Hicks Nissan's pillars are pretty durable because it stopped an 18-wheeler from entering onto their property."
