CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Local schools and universities are now being impacted by COVID-19.

Students already on Spring Break at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas A&M-Kingsville and Del Mar College will now be getting an extended Spring Break. School leaders are extending the break by a week to give administrators a chance to assess the health situation and deep-clean campuses.

While there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Nueces County or on any of those campuses, A&M-CC students KRIS 6 News spoke to are on board with the school's decision.

"There's close proximity, so you never know just how easily it can transfer," said A&M-CC freshman Nathan Grossman. "Yeah, its a pandemic now, but we still have to get on with our daily lives, and just do what we have to do, especially with academics and all."

"I think it's a great decision," said A&M-CC freshman Stephanie Parada. "This is just going to help control everything and prevent anybody from getting sick. And that's, honestly, the priority."

Texas A&M-CC President and CEO Kelly M. Miller explained the thought behind the extended break in a statement.

"Many members of our community have been traveling during spring break, making our efforts to fully assess health risks more difficult," she said. "As a result, we will be extending spring break for students through Friday, March 20, 2020."

The statement went on to say the university will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates through Islander email and the university website. Meanwhile, student housing and food services will remain available.
