CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, with turkey fryers a big contributor.

The Erie Insurance Co. offers up seven tips for safe deep frying to keep you out of trouble.

Start with buying the right size bird - usually 12 to 14 pounds.

And make sure it's thawed completely.

Find the right spot for the frying process

Do not overfill the fryer.

When you're cooking, go slowly and stay close.

And be ready with an all-purpose, dry-powder fire extinguisher, just in case.

Never use water on a grease fire.

And with so many people cooking up their thanksgiving feasts, city wants to help get rid of those fats, oils and grease properly.

The city posting images online is saying it’s giving away containers so you don't wash it down the drain.

It's part of the annual holiday grease roundup that began Saturday and runs through Jan. 4.

Those containers are available for curbside pickup at the Water Utilities Department at 2726 Holly Road.

The city asks you to please call ahead of time to request one.
