ROCKPORT, Texas — Officers with the Rockport Police Department are asking for the public's help in assisting first responders affected by Hurricane Laura.
Laura made landfall last Thursday in Louisiana. As the storm moved on, clean up and recovery efforts are underway.
And with the conditions in mind after a hurricane makes landfall, Rockport police want to provide much-needed equipment and supplies to their counterparts in areas affected by Hurricane Laura.
Cmdr. Larry Sinclair stated in a news release, "From our efforts following Hurricane Harvey, we know exactly what will be needed by the first responders to carry on their jobs and to pass on the remaining supplies to the community. We also know that there are smaller communities, like Refugio three years ago, that don’t receive recovery supplies right away because attention is focused on larger or direct-hit cities,” he added.
The Rockport Police Department is asking for specific items that will be needed as the first responders carry out their recovery efforts:
- Cleaning supplies such as bleach, antibacterial wipes, mops, brooms, buckets.
- Sanitary supplies such as baby wipes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo.
- Tools such as crowbars, sledgehammers, shovels, chainsaws, and other power tools.
- Masks.
- Insect repellent.
- Sunscreen.
- 110-volt AC units.
- Generators.
- Gas cans.
- Extension cords.
- Work gloves.
If you want to help out, you're encouraged to drop off these items at the Rockport Public Safety Center, 714 E. Concho. They will be stored in outbuildings at the Rockport Service Center.
Once a date has been confirmed, the cargo will be loaded and will travel in a caravan to the affected area with police escort.
