CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — When students have the necessary school supplies to learn and complete their assignments, that can lead to success in the classroom. However, workers with the Purple Door say their younger residents have an urgent need for school supplies and clothes.

The Purple Door is a non-profit organization that assists victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The organization offers many services for all ages, but a few essential items are needed for their youth.

“Last year we served 2,185 people, and of that roughly 33% were children,” said President and C.E.O. of the Purple Door Frances Wilson.

Wilson says the Purple Door serves 12 counties here in the Coastal Bend and within these areas, many children live either at their shelter or off-site.

“Our kids are already at a disadvantage because they have lived in an abusive situation, and so it’s great for them to be in a safe place and to have what they need so they can be as successful as they can,” said Wilson.

Administration with the Purple Door say they serve students from pre-k to high school seniors. The non-profit is seeking school supplies such as paper, markers, pens/pencils, and folders. For a clothing donation, new undergarments and socks only. The non-profit also says new or gently used shirts, pants, and shoes are acceptable.

“The donations really do make a difference, and if you can remember to back when you were a kid and how excited you were for the first day of school and getting all your school supplies together and having that new outfit, and your new shoes I mean that’s a big deal to our kids too,” said Wilson.

If you have fallen victim to sexual assault or domestic violence, know that help is available. You can call the Purple Door’s hotline at 361-881-8888. To donate clothes and school supplies for their students you can drop items off at 813 Buford St, Corpus Christi, TX 78404.
