Public safety grants renewed in Coastal Bend area for 2021

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — In a statement Friday from Governor Greg Abbott’s office, the city of Corpus Christi and its surrounding areas will be receiving 52 different award grants tied to the governor’s Public Safety Office.

Of the $296 million Texas will be receiving statewide, $2,693,904.22 will be coming to the Coastal Bend area for fiscal year 2021.

According to that release, the grants recently released include, but are not limited to, funding for programs related to:

  • Addressing Violence Against Women – 3 ($125,558.01)
  • Bullet Resistant Vests – 1 ($14,592.48)
  • Homeland Security – 8 ($649,988.84)
  • Human Trafficking – 1 ($33,339.50)
  • Justice Assistance – 9 ($313,181.18)
  • Juvenile Justice and Truancy Prevention – 4 ($218,295.04)
  • Local Border Security (Border Star) – 19 ($566,991)
  • Serving Victims of Crime – 7 ($771,958.17)

Under the scope of programs that address violence against women, one program includes the city of Corpus Christi’s Victim Assistance Program in the amount of $48,211.68.

A spokeswoman for the Corpus Christi Police Department said the grants they have been awarded for the coming year are are regularly applied for and nothing new to the department.

Within Nueces County, one of the many grants in which they are to continue receive funding for is their “Monitoring Offenders Against Women” program for $31,187.28.
