North Beach Canal proposal meets opposition

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The City Council is expected to decide the fate of the proposed North Beach drainage canal today.

Passage of the canal proposal is far from a done deal.

There is a North Beach Canal ordinance on today's agenda added by District 1 City Councilman Everett Roy and three other council members last week.

However, that ordinance needs several changes before it can be approved.

Last Friday, the city attorney wrote a lengthy objection which listed 10 ways the ordinance violates the city charter.

The council can discuss changes on the floor and in executive session before voting.

If approved, the canal will be the centerpiece of a multi-million dollar redevelopment effort on North Beach.

Developers want the city to commit to a canal today to take advantage of federal tax incentives.
