CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A Mexican national has been sentenced to 10 years in prison at the federal courthouse for his part in a human smuggling attempt that left six people dead near Robstown last year.

The sentence was given to 31-year-old Ivan Puga Moreno, who was driving an SUV that crashed in June 2019.

Eighteen suspected illegal immigrants were in the vehicle.

And instead of calling for help, he fled to Houston where he was later arrested in February.

Puga-Moreno pleaded guilty to federal charges of human smuggling that resulted in death and injury.
