CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — Saturday morning, a national initiative made it's way to the Coastal Bend, and it was all in the air.
The campaign, 'In Plain Sight,' was spear-headed by two artists, Cassils and Rafa Esparza. It took a year to make the campaign come to fruition.
Throughout the Fourth of July weekend, art is used to expose the abuses of American detention centers. A coalition of 80 artists skytype messages over 80 detention facilities across the U.S.
Each message was created by a separate artist. Then, plane flew over different locations across the country to display these messages, all ending with the #XMAP.
This hashtag is supposed to represent, x-marks the spot. As in, this is the spot that a detention facility is.X-map is also the website that has resources and information to help educate people on the the incarceration and deportation of people in our country.
Messages were spelled out with water vapor and could be seen for miles.
Above the Nueces County Jail, read, "BURSTING IN AIR #XMAP." This was created by L.A. based artist, Susan Stilton.
Campaign co-creator, Cassils says, "people can see this mass amplification, this message that reaches 3 million people per message. But they can only see it for a second. And we're in this moment that's so critical in our country right now, like we're seeing the truth, but we need to act."
Cassils and Rafa Esparza hope the messages in the sky prompt people to act and take action against immigration status and deportation.
