CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Diabetes is a serious health issue in Nueces County, especially because the price people are paying for life-saving diabetes medicine, can be quite costly. It can be so costly, that the County is considering taking action.

Tomorrow, county commissioners will talk about suing responsible parties who are to blame for the rising prices of diabetes medication, something that many people deal with here in the Coastal Bend.

A local pharmacist says depending on your insurance or income, some people could pay anywhere from a couple hundred dollars to a couple thousand.

The County will be discussing taking legal action and suing those companies/doctors who make/distribute diabetes medications.

The County agenda states the involved parties are in violation of being deceptive and negligent when it comes to diabetes medicine.

"There are a lot of people who are very concerned about the costs, probably a lot of them are on a fixed income, and it can be a burden to people," said Olga Bacio, a pharmacist at ASB Cares. "It can be a burden to people, especially on fixed income when they have to decide whether to eat, whether to pay their bills, get their medication, so I can definitely understand where it's a problem for people."

Nueces County will also consider hiring an outside lawfirm to discuss the issue.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in ten people have diabetes.
