Local game wardens get a new ride

Texas game wardens in this area have a new ride.

They unveiled a new addition to their fleet of patrol boats Thursday: a shallow water patrol skiff.

It was purchased with the help of the Texas Parks & Wildlife Foundation and a non-profit conservation group called Flatsworthy Incorporated.

They raised more than $65,000 for the boat.

Discussion to add to the fleet began last summer due to an increased demand.

"The population on the coast of Texas has increased dramatically," said Region Maj. Ellis Powell. "We have limited resources: They're not making any more water or anymore land, so the pressure is increasing everyday."

The custom-made skiff is an eco-friendly design.

The prop is in a recessed well so it doesn't protrude from the bottom of the boat and churn up mud and seagrass.

That allows game wardens to navigate through just inches of water.
