CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS — Hurricane Hanna not only brought a strong storm surge but also caused power outages throughout the area.
For many local businesses, power outages caused them to delay opening for the week.
“With the power going out last night, or not coming back on until last night at 9 o’clock almost, it would have been very difficult we would have had to work overnight to be open,” said Jeff Rosenhoover, General Manager of Snoopy’s, Scoopy’s and Marker 37.
He said the restaurants tried to prepare by storing food in a refrigerated truck and clearing the perimeter of anything that could blow away.
Monday morning, staff were cleaning and unloading to the truck.
“We secured all the food back into the kitchen, we prepped everything up, cleaning the parking lots, putting all the tables and chairs back,” said Rosenhoover.
Fortunately, there was no damage to either restaurants.
Marker 37 also lost power over the weekend but was restored on Monday morning.
“We would have been one of the only places on the water where the emergency boats could fuel, so we wanted to try and get that up as fast as possible.”
Across town, a local diner has had a lot of battles in 2020.
Hanna was one of them, causing the power to go out over the weekend.
Owner Sandra Clark of Sandi’s Diner said she didn’t know if she would have power on when she walked in Monday morning.
“This morning when I came, the electricity was finally on after about 28 hours, so everything in the fridge had to go,” she said.
Clark said she had to rush to the grocery store to grab enough items so she could open at 11.
“Which I can live with that, my damage is just the food.”
However, Clark has had to deal with quite a bit this year.
“Beginning of 2020 was the best I’d ever had,” she said. “Then COVID hit, and we just decided to be as safe as we possibly could, to follow the rules. And the people still came. So, I’ve been broken into four times in four months, but every break-in we just stand back up and do it again.”
That last break-in, happened just a week before Hanna.
“I drove up and the window was broke and all they stole was trash bags, I don’t know what they’re looking for.”
At this point, Clark said she just takes the hits as they come and will continue to bounce right back.
Snoopy’s opens Tuesday at regular business hours, Sandi’s Diner will be open all week at their regular hours as well.
