Hazel Bazemore Park looking to get upgrades

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — Hazel Bazemore Park is one of the best bird watching parks in the Coastal Bend.

"This is the county’s biggest park and it’s the most beautiful, I think. And it’s just a hidden park that a lot of people don’t know it’s here," said Nueces Co. Commissioner Prect. 1, Carolyn Vaughn.

She spoke to KRIS 6 about wanting to upgrade parts of the park.

"So we need to have amenities, like a big park out here."

Vaughn says on Wednesday in Co. Commissioners Court, she will propose a plan that will show what she hopes to have done to the park. Her plan is to create an area for kids, add in more benches and some more shading.

One Calallen resident reached out to KRIS 6 this weekend about getting some work done on the park.

"I come on out here for the hawk watch, in the fall here," said resident Richard King. "And we got people from Europe, that come here specifically to go do the hawk watch."

King enjoys the HawkWatch at the park and said for the most part, the upper part of the park is in good shape. He says he just has issues with the potholes on some of the roads.

"Basically it’s just the roadway here, the roadway at the far end down there, been trashed out for about 9 months or so," he said.

When KRIS 6 let Vaughn know of the recent complaint she decided to take a drive throughout the park to see which areas need tending to the most.

"He is correct in the fact there are areas of the road that need to be fixed that we have plans to fix."

Vaughn said with the COVID-19 pandemic, county workers have been backed up with work and have not made it to the park to fix potholes in the road.

She said she will work on it this week, she also said her plan to upgrade Hazel Bazemore Park should be complete in a few months, if all goes as planned.
