CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS — Former Corpus Christi Police officer Norma Deleon was sentenced to some time in jail Tuesday morning.
Judge Sandra Watts sentenced Deleon to one week in the Nueces County Jail for what Judge Watts says was an abuse of power.
Before receiving word of her punishment, Judge Watts said, "There is a power that police officers have just by wearing the uniform. There is a power that we have as Judges just by climbing these steps, sitting up high above everyone else, and wearing this black robe. You can not abuse that power, and what I saw one that video was appalling to me, where yes, there were police officers there to do a welfare check. The jury found you not guilty of impersonating a CPS worker but when that man asks you all to leave after the welfare check, he asked five times on least on that video and the way he was treated as a citizen of this community as a father of the child when all of this was happening in the home and in front of his child, I think was abuse of power."
Deleon will start that sentence in January.
She also received two years of probation and one hundred days of community service. If Deleon violates her probation, she could serve up to one year in jail.
Deleon was found guilty on two counts of official oppression last month.
In November 2018, police say Deleon asked two officers to meet her for a welfare check on a child on Carroll Lane.
Body-cam video shows the father asking Deleon to leave several times, but she refused.
