CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Emergency crews are reminding residents this Halloween season on how decorations outside your home can help others get into the spirit but not to block the numbers and letters to your address.

“It's real important you know especially during Halloween and if it's busy you know it's a lot of traffic you know you got to make sure people are able to get through in case of an emergency,” said Junior Martinez.

Homeowner Junior Martinez says it took him about two days to place all his Halloween decorations outside his home. Martinez says in case of an emergency, he planned ahead to make sure none of his decorations are blocking his address and visible for first responders.

“That being visible, makes it easier on safety personnel if the need arises,” said Martinez.

Corpus Christi Fire Chief Robert Rocha says a visible address can help with response times during emergencies.

“One of the things we like to do is we also like to validate the address that's given to us on our computer screen with what appears on your home and so if it's clear to the firefighters it's clear to the first responders then it helps us do our job in getting to you in a timely manner,” said Chief Rocha.

“So you can't say it's the clown house street you got to know the actual number and the street name,” said homeowner Pat Martinez.

Residents also say there are different ways to make sure your address is in plain sight for first responders.

“You have to have your digits legible on your mailboxes and of course the digits on your house or some people even put it on their curbs,” said Pat Martinez.
