CORPUS CHRISTI, Tx. — Ron Guerrero made it as a boxer. Now he is taking young boxers looking to succeed under his wing.

"You see the hunger in their eyes and you want to help them achieve their goals," Guerrero said.

His gym, the Ron Guerrero Boxing Gym, sees a flood of young high school boxers coming in looking to hone their craft and become better at the sport.

For some, they are experts, others are novice but they are all there getting better; in and out of the ring.

"It just keeps you out of trouble, it keeps you disciplined," one of the students, Zaaron Pacheco said.

These kids use the discipline they are learning and are applying it to other aspects of their lives, namely in the classroom.

"It keeps you're grades up it keeps you disciplined," Justin Gonzales said.

For Guerrero, he has the kids competing for belts, titles and trophies. Yes they serve as a reward for the students he is coaching, but it is also there to serve as motivation.

"You have to set high standards for them," Guerrero said. "You have to make them go out there and earn something."

He is making each and everyone earn something. Whether or not they win their matches along the way is obviously important, but they are gaining valuable experience that will help them down the road in life.
