County commissioners approved a financial fix to get themselves out of hot water with the federal government.
It has been two years since the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service gave Nueces county a $750,000 federal grant to build an observation deck for the public on Bob Hall Pier.
The county was ruled out of compliance when it allowed Mikel May’s restaurant to be built on the deck and was then ordered to pay back the grant or close the restaurant.
Their solution includes accepting $250,000 from the Port of Corpus Christi to build an observation deck on Horace Caldwell Pier in Port Aransas.
Commissioners are hoping building the deck there would still meet the original criteria for the grant.
