Game rooms in Nueces county may soon require permits to operate. That was a big topic at today's county commissioners meeting.
Commissioners heard from Sheriff John Hooper, who explained the current legal grey area.
He told commissioners that, while the game rooms themselves are not illegal in Texas, he says there are illegal and criminal activities going on.
“It's real problematic,” he said. “Next to impossible for us to enforce the penal code gambling because of the nature of these gaming rooms, especially when they're private clubs to some degree, and we can't gain access without a warrant.”
There are more than 50 of these game rooms in the county.
