Concerns expressed over Shoreline Blvd. drag racing

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Some people are concerned about drag racing they say is happening along Shoreline Boulevard, between the American Bank Center and the Federal Courthouse.

"Not only is it annoying, it's dangerous, because people ride those scooters," Corpus Christi resident Frank Salazar said. "They can get hit -- especially at night when it's dark."

Salazar likes to fish off the dock that's across Shoreline Boulevard from the American Bank Center. He said the solace the recreation provides him is often shattered by the sound of screeching tires and revving engines.

"It's upsetting a little bit, because some people get out here just to be in the stillness and quiet," he said. "But then you've got all that noise back there."

Fellow fisherman Jose Mejia is also offended by the occasional drag race.

"They make a lot of noise," Mejia said. "The tires smoke and everything. That's bad."

The Corpus Christi Police Department told KRIS 6 News that one day's time is not long enough to assemble statistics about citations, arrests, and wrecks involving street-racing in that area, but we will continue to work to get those figures for a follow-up story.

Neither Salazar nor Mejia know of any wrecks, but they wouldn't be surprised if there was one eventually.

"Not yet," Mejia said. "They get lucky I guess."

"It sounds like they're close to crashing," Salazar said.
