CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS — The City of Beeville is in the process of replacing all of the old water meters with new smart meters around the city.
The city has agreed to spend $3.65 million to replace all the Beeville water meters. That's the cost of the meters plus the installation of the new software.
“Our meters, on average, are 20 years old which is very old for water meters. Typically they have a life range from 10-15 years so we are well past the time to replace the meters,” said Beeville City Manager John Benson.
The money spent on this project will focus on residential and commercial properties.
“The city is paying for it, but we are paying for it through the cost savings. We realized a more accurate revenue stream that will be achieved through the new meters,” said Benson.
One of the biggest differences with these smart meters is the option for customers to check their consumption daily online.
“They also modernized our meter system to where our customers will be able to go online, look at their water usage, current as well as historical. The system will also provide a leak detection that will be able to notify customers that they have a sudden increase in water usage which is often an indication of a leak,” said Benson.
City Manager John Benson believes the new smart meters will provide financial savings to the city, which will translate to the taxpayer.
The new smart system is being paid with funds from the Water and Wastewater Department.
