ALICE, Texas — The city of Alice is also getting into the desal business.

The city recently accepted a bid from Seven Seas Water to build a brackish water desalination plant near the city's current water plant.

The water treated by this plant would come from the Jasper Aquifer.

Seven Seas will pay to build and operate the facility for 15 years after which the city of Alice would assume ownership.

Alice currently buys its water from the city of Corpus Christi.

Alice city manager Michael Esparza says that will continue even with a desal plant.

“We're going to have that secondary source available for us to make sure that we always have water,” Esparza said.

The city of Alice will now get permits from the TCEQ.

He hopes the plant is up and running by late next year.
