CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi City Manager Peter Zanoni spoke at a town hall meeting hosted by the Flour Bluff Citizens Council Monday night, addressing homelessness among many other issues.

"We asked him to give us his vision for the city and let us know how Flour Bluff is part of that vision," council president Shirley Thornton said.

Zanoni spoke for 45 minutes in front of a crowd of about 75 people that included city council members, the fire and police chief, and the sheriff. He covered a wide range of issues, and then conducted a brief question-and-answer period with the audience. But homelessness came up a number of times.

"How can a city this big -- or with this big of problem -- have nobody assigned to work on homelessness?" Zanoni says he asked himself upon taking office earlier this year.

Since that time, Zanoni has done some rearranging of employees at City Hall. That's allowed him to create three positions dedicated to fighting homelessness and the problems that come with it. He's filled one so far and believes he'll hire the other two by the end of the week.

That news drew the approval of long time and relatively new Flower Bluff residents.

"He's making a lot of changes in a positive direction," resident of four years Cynthia Hamilton said. "I think he's eliminating some inefficiencies, and I think everything is moving in the right direction."

"He's going in the right direction," forty-year resident Lee Wheatley agreed. "I think we have a good future ahead of us."
