CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Sure, you’ve indulged a little over Christmas.
But before you cut out sweets completely from your diet, now is the time to indulge in those chocolate treats you received for the holidays – for at least one more day.
Today marks National Chocolate Candy Day.
Chocolate -- which comes from the tropical cacao tree -- has been around for at least three millennia, according to the national calendar day.
It was used in beverages up until 1828 when a Dutch inventor developed a way to make chocolate in solid form by removing the cocoa butter from the cacao.
In 1847, sugar was added to create the popular chocolate treats we know and love today.
American consume an estimated 12 pounds of chocolate each year.
