CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — During this holiday season, Corpus Christi Police Department officers want homeowners to be on the lookout for porch pirates.

“As soon as we checked the cameras and thought it could be here, it could really be here,” homeowner Josh Caballero said.

Due to the ongoing pandemic Corpus Christi native, Josh Caballero lost his job and says it was frustrating to see someone walk up to his porch and steal his items, all caught on his home security camera.

“For us to check the cameras and it not be here, and it was so messed up just to see everything happen, everything unfold,” said Caballero.

The porch pirate was even bold enough to look at the camera, take the package, and still walk away.

“I know that I am out of a job right now, and I'm trying to find it due to COVID," Caballero said. "But I'm still trying. I'm not going to resort to stealing. I'm going to still keep working." Caballero said.

Police say homeowners must keep their eyes open.

“People just need to be aware - that because you are going to be receiving more packages, you want to be even more vigilant,” Corpus Christi Police Department Lt. Michael Pena said.

Officers also say if you see any suspicious activity to report the situation right away.

“That person may be going around the neighborhood and we can piece together information from one victim to another victim and build a bigger picture to hopefully apprehend that offender," Pena said. "So that's why it's important to always generate a report."

Police advise that if you don’t feel comfortable having items on your porch, you have the option to have your items delivered at your nearest post office.

“If you see somebody going up to your neighbors' house that doesn't look like your neighbor, give us a call,” said Pena.

Caballero’s story ended on a positive note as he was able to get a refund from Amazon.

So what did the porch pirate get away with?

Caballero said it was just a small part that was going to be used for his coffee maker.
