CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Los Encinos Elementary School is one of Corpus Christi Independent School District schools using the lesson plans. They are about 30-minutes long and include activities and exercises that go over physical and mental health.

CCISD said it understands the pandemic has presented families with a variety of challenges. "Now that our doors are open, and we are receiving students, we wanted to build a lesson and model that for our students and for our families,” said CCISD Executive Dir. for Educational Support & Counseling Jennifer Arismendi.

A new lesson plan is addressing both physical and mental health for students and families.

"We opened our mini lesson that we created just talking about feelings. Because we know that students and families may have mixed feelings about coming back and we wanted to let them know that that was ok,” said Arismendi.

Another component of the lesson is physical health which allows educators to remind students of how to be safe during this pandemic.

"This is where we have been reinforcing CDC guidelines regarding wearing our masks and social distancing and making sure we are washing our hands following proper protocol,” said Arismendi.

The lesson plan can be accessed anytime through the district’s canvas site and teachers can use it once a week or as often as they see fit.

"We know that teaching a student one time is not going to be enough. We know it takes repetition and so we built in opportunities, and so we built in opportunities for repetition,” said Aresmendi.

The district has also taken to social media to help families. They are covering topics like, “Mindful Mondays, Talk about it Tuesday, and Wellness Wednesday.” The posts offer activity ideas and other tips.
