CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Dozens of people started off the new year on the right foot.

They gathered at Heritage Park this morning for the start of the New Year's Day Harbor Bridge Walk.

The bridge walk is held once a month, usually on a Sunday.

This year, organizers decided to do the January walk on New Year's Day.

It takes about an hour to complete the 3.4 mile walk.

The bridge walk started in 2010 as a family event with just 35 people.

Since then about 30,000 people have taken part in the bridge walk.

“I'm constantly amazed at how delighted people are that we run this event they would never have thought of walking the bridge before and now they do and come back again,” event organizer Alan Albin said.

It’s proven popular to those who keep coming back – month after month.

“This is actually really awesome here,” walker Amy Ruger said. “Doing the bridge walk, it’s healthy, it’s fun and you get out to meet new people.”

The next bridge walk is Feb. 9 – rain or shine.

It’s free. And if you walk the bridge five times, you get a free t-shirt.
