A trash truck crash left hundreds of people without power this morning.

Just after 6:20 a.m., a dump truck snagged some power lines and took down a power pole behind the Carmel Village Shopping Center on the 4100 block of South Staples Street.

According to AEP Texas Corporate Communications manager Omar Lopez, the incident knocked out power to about 1,000 homes and businesses. Shelley Mitchell who lives at the Carmel Parkway Apartments was not happy.

Carmel Parkway Apartment resident Shelley Smith said she was getting ready for work when the power went out.

“I was getting ready for work and the power went out. I called AEP to report the outage and they told me there was an accident on the southside. I didn’t know it was on the southside of my apartments and then I come out and see this,” Mitchell said.

She was concerned because several elderly residents live in her complex. Fortunately, AEP Texas was able to switch circuits and restore power to most of the area by 7:10 a.m.

Meanwhile, 17 customers still remain without power until repairs to the pole are made.
