A 2-year-old child was killed and five other people were hospitalized in an automobile accident this afternoon in Kleberg County on U.S. Highway 77 near Riviera.

According to D.P.S. Public Information Officer Sgt. Nathan Brandley, a suburban was heading northbound. The vehicle left its lane and hit an oncoming truck tractor semi-trailer traveling southbound about one-quarter mile south of State Highway 285 near Riviera.

Five people were in the suburban. Kleberg said the child who died was in a car seat.

Officers at the scene employed the Jaws of Life to remove some of the victims from the suburban.

Brandley said the driver of the suburban and a child were airlifted to Corpus Christi hospitals with serious injuries.

A woman in the suburban and a child are being taken to a Kingsville hospital.

The driver of the semi was taken to Spohn Hospital in Kingsville.

Meanwhile, traffic is being rerouted to the southbound lanes.
