Complaints about the taste and smell of city tap water has led to an investigation by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. It comes just one day after a city spokesperson told KRIS 6, the water quality was in compliance.
It turns out, there’s not one, but two issues with our water supply.
Gabriel Ramirez, the assistant director of water quality and treatment, says recent heavy rains may have led to the strange smells and taste.
“Whenever you have heavy rainfall and cold temperatures, and then warm temperatures… and back and forth, that does cause the lakes to turnover,” said Ramirez.
In other words, Lake Corpus Christi got stirred up by the rain, but that isn’t the only issue.
Ramirez adds last week the city also did an algae treatment in preparation for the warmer months. But he says that does not impact the water’s smell and taste.
Meanwhile, the city continues to take water samples everyday as they always do, and they’ll also be working closely with TCEQ.
“We’re definitely in communication with them with regards to water quality and things of this nature, to make sure that we’re on the same page as they are,” said Ramirez.
The TCEQ does not have any findings, as they’ve just started their investigation. When they’re done, they say those results will be made available to the public. KRIS 6 will keep you updated as soon as we find out anything.
