MATHIS –  Right off the corner of San Patricio Avenue and 359, you’ll see a cute shack snuggled on the corner.

Butter’s BBQ has been making a name for itself for the past two years. Cooking up some of the best brisket, chopped BBQ sandwiches and homemade sausage around.

Andrew Soto is the pitmaster behind Butter’s BBQ. Soto says the name Butter’s came from his very own nickname. Soto says his uncle names him ‘butterball’ after a butterball turkey, when he was just a 10 lb premature baby. A name that stuck with him throughout his childhood.

“It’s actually weird when someone calls me Andrew,” says Butter.

Butter’s is made possible by Soto’s family who help keep the place running. His mother, Frances makes those homemade tortillas, potato salad and other sides. Soto’s brother is the mastermind behind the homemade sausage, taking the fat trimmings from the meats they used daily.

Butter was not just a name to go by, but a way of life. His father, was a brisket Buc Days Champion in the early 2000’s. Giving much of that talent to Butter, Soto soon realized he wanted to open his own BBQ joint.

In December of 2017, came Butter’s BBQ. The new Mathis food joint has been gaining some popularity, especially after the article from Texas Monthly that helped put the restaurant on the map.

Whether you’re in a hurry and need the drive-thru, want to sit down for lunch or get catering, Butter’s BBQ has a lot a bit of your smoked meat needs.

Opened Wednesday-Sunday, Butter says people should get here early on the weekends, because they might not find a table or even food past 3 or 4 o’clock.
