Police say a tragedy was avoided because of an alert driver on the city’s Northside.

The incident happened Saturday morning in a neighborhood near Port Avenue and Mary Street.

According to police, a toddler was playing with a jar of playdough and it rolled off of a driveway and went into the street.

As the child went to pick up the plastic jar, a vehicle was approaching the intersection.

Police said the driver of the car was already slowing down his car as the vehicle was approaching the intersection and gave himself enough reaction time to hit the brakes once the child ran into the street.

The car bumped the child, luckily the toddler did not suffer any injuries.

Police say the incident could have been worse if the driver was distracted or speeding to the intersection.
