Westbound Highway 358  was shut down at the Staples exit for hours this morning after a wrong-way driver crashed into another car.

The accident happened just after 5 a.m.

The 28-year-old male driver of the wrong-way vehicle, a grey SUV, died at the scene, according to Corpus Christi Police Department officers.

A 71-year-old Hispanic man in the SUV that was hit was pinned for a short time and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Three other people in the SUV that was hit by the wrong-way driver were uninjured: a 47-year-old female, a 21-year-old male and a 20-year-old female.

Officers first got calls about the wrong-way driver at Old Brownsville Road, officials said. The crash had already occurred when they located the wrong-way driver.

This is the seventh crash reported to Corpus Christi police in the first eight hours of 2019.
