The Corpus Christi City Council unanimously approved a proposal for the proposed Riley P. Dog Park at its meeting Tuesday.

Riley P. Dog Park, Inc. submitted a request to lease a 2½-acre lot near the Whitecap Wastewater Treatment Plant to build the dog park.

The council will have a final reading of the proposal next week.

If approved then, work should begin by the end of the year excavating the property and installing fencing.

Future plans then would include putting in irrigation, grass, benches and shade structures.

Corpus Christi City Council members are looking to grant the group a five-year lease on the land to build and maintain the park at no cost to taxpayers.
