A woman and her pet safely escaped an overnight house fire but must now look for a temporary place to stay after the home was left uninhabitable.

Firefighters with the CCFD responded to a call right at 4:15 a.m. on the 7700 block of Hartley Circle. When crews arrived, large flames could be seen coming from the garage area of the home, according to CCFD Battalion Chief Michael Schmidt. Schmidt said the contents of the garage made it difficult to get to the flames when they arrived.

The garage of the home was engulfed when firefighters arrived.

“There’s hundreds and hundreds of books and boxes all over, so it was just moving that stuff out of the way and getting to it,” Schmidt said.

The flames, which engulfed the attic above the garage, were under control within 45 minutes, Schmidt said. Thick plywood between the home and the garage possibly saved the living portion of the home from damage from flames, though it did suffer some smoke damage.

Schmidt said though owners will be able to rebuild the home, it is currently uninhabitable due to damage to the electrical wiring and breaker box.

The woman refused medical treatment on scene, according to Schmidt. She will receive assistance from the Red Cross if needed.

Investigators are on scene trying to determine the cause of the fire.
