The Rockin’ Rockport Youth Regatta was held at the Rockport Yacht Club this weekend.
Kids ages 6 to 18 came from all over Texas to compete in the event, which is part of Texas Sailing Association’s Youth Circuit.
Jack Hattendorf, who traveled here from Arlington with his daughter Aubin, says children can learn so much from sailing.
“The kids learn independence. They go out on the water, and they’re on their own,” Hattendorf said.
Parents and coaches are not allowed to offer direction or instruction once the participants are on the water.
“It’s a really strategic sport.” adds Hattendorf.
While competition is fierce, most of the kids participating say the experience of being on the water is the most important thing.
Keen Cabrera, 9, who traveled here from Austin, says he loves his time out on the water.
“I think I’d like to sail until I can’t do it anymore,” Cabrera said.
