AEP says a major transformer failure at the Cabaniss Substation has left nearly 5,000 Corpus Christi customers without power.

The outage was reported at about 12:45 p.m. on the city’s south side.

A spokesperson for AEP says they are working to replace the transformer, but it is a large piece of equipment and will take time.

“We are trying to shift loads and bring up customers from other parts of their system,” said Frank Espinoza with AEP. “It’s been a challenge with temperatures and customers using A/C units.”

AEP says they do not yet have an estimate for when power will be restored.
