For many members of the community Independence Day means more than just cookouts and fireworks.
It's about history.
Today, several folks gathered at the Nueces County Courthouse for a special reading of the Declaration of Independence.
Those who attended this special reading of these very important documents say this is something Americans should always keep in mind.
Voices came together and the national anthem rang at the courthouse.
But the main stars at today's event – the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution -- documents that set the path and have shaped America.
“People forget the reasons they forget the things that were happening,” organizer Chuck Burnett said.
And to keep that from happening, organizer Chuck Burnett says it's important to remember America's principles.
“The purpose of July 4th is to remember the birth of this nation and the birth of this nation started with the Declaration of Independence,” he said.
Remembering these historic documents always is a thrill for Michael Bergsma, Nueces County Republican chairman.
“Oh, it’s fun, looking back at our founding documents,” he said. “Look at the things that have made us what we are.”
Among those there to take in these powerful words included Nueces County Sheriff J.C. Hooper. He says the values in these documents are essential to his job.
“And in my job, elected officials preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States,” Hooper said.
Those taking part in today's readings varied in age from old to young. It’s a sign these words will carry on from generation to generation.
“It should never lose the message,” Hooper said. “These suffering and the commitment of our founders should never be forgotten. It should never be lost.”
This is the sixth year in a row that these readings have been held.
Organizers say they hope to keep this tradition going for the foreseeable future.
