Vitamin shortages over reported ability to fight COVID-19

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Claims from some experts that certain vitamins and minerals can help your body fight COVID-19 likely explains why some local pharmacies and supplement stores are seeing a run on people buying those products.

The owner of Nichols Southside Pharmacy in Corpus Christi said he's seen what he called a slight shortage of vitamins C and D and zinc.

"People get scared about (stores running out of those products)," John McNeill said. "And they go out, and buy a lot of it, and it becomes short.”

To ensure he's able to keep his shelves stocked with those products, he says he's put in some extra orders.

Panic buying isn't new at McNeill's store, and he sees some similarity to another event during the novel coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s just like the toilet paper," he said.
