CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Judge Joe Benavides was discharged from the hospital Monday as he recovered from COVID complications.

Benavides released the information by facebook late Monday evening.

The retired Marine said he was mowing his lawn June 23, when he began getting chills and then struggled to breathe.

“This virus -- it takes you down," he told KRIS 6 News last week. "I know what occurred to me. I tried to go the restroom, I went upstairs and fell on the stairs.”

Benavides went to Christus Spohn Shoreline, where doctors diagnosed him with COVID-19.

He also was told his lungs seemed damaged. The former U.S. Marine believes he experienced the damage while he serving in Kuwait during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The damage only made things worse.

“(The doctor) said 'That's what made this even worse, it was something that you must understand, the virus wants you down', ” Benavides said.
