CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Flour Bluff school trustees have voted to submit a waiver to the Texas Education Agency extending remote instruction an additional four weeks until Oct. 5.

The district says this additional four-week waiver will provide further time to prepare for a safe return to campus for students, teachers and staff.

TEA provides this opportunity for districts to restrict access to on-campus instruction if the district feels it is in the best interest of the health and safety of students and staff.

“Moving forward with the waiver provides the District extra time to see if positivity rates of the virus go down,” Flour Bluff ISD acting superintendent Joe Kelley said. “We understand this may be inconvenient for some, but feel this is the best course of action for the safety and welfare of our students, staff and community.”

Flour Bluff ISD is beginning the school year on Thursday with remote instruction for all students. The additional four-week waiver will push the start of on-campus or face-to-face instruction into the first week of October. The District had already implemented remote instruction to continue until Sept. 8.

The board-approved waiver will now be submitted to TEA. If approved, Flour Bluff ISD will begin on-campus instruction Monday, Oct. 5. Once schools reopen for on-campus instruction, parents will have the option to send their child to school each day or continue with online, remote instruction.
