Delivery orders rise during COVID-19 pandemic

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — As people continue to practice social distancing, more are looking into getting food and groceries delivered.

KRIS 6 reached out to a few delivery shoppers from Shipt, Favor and DoorDash, and all shoppers have seen an increase in orders.

Shipt Shopper Alia Kirschner says she has not only seen more orders but a lot of new customers as well, "I’m seeing a lot of new addresses, and new members."

Not only has there been an increase in work, she says delivering goods to homes has changed as well.

"99% of my orders right now are porch drop, porch drops," Kirschner said.

Typically, Shipt shoppers would deliver goods inside a persons home or at the door. While practicing social distancing, Kirschner says Shipt is recommending porch drop offs.

Considered "essential" Kirschner was asked if she feels safe shopping in grocery stores where she could possibly get COVID-19.

She says the grocery stores have done a good job of keeping shopping carts clean. She then sprays her insulated bags with Lysol and the first thing she does when getting home is washing her clothes and taking a shower.

Kirschner says tips have also been bigger, but the nicer paychecks are not why she chooses to do delivery during this pandemic.

"For the average healthy adult, I’d rather risk myself doing that than have someone that would possibly have a much worse outcome if they were exposed," she said.

Shipt says they plan to give masks and hand sanitizer to all of their shoppers during this time.
