CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi Seven Day Film Project 2020 (CC7D) has been canceled.
The yearly film festival has drawn crowds since 2007.
The festival requires teams of local filmmakers to make and submit a short film in seven days. The event culminates in the viewing and judging of everyone's projects in a venue.
"We cannot ask people to risk exposure to a virus whose results range from asymptomatic to hospitalization or death," said a statement from the CC7D steering committee. "There are too many variables with too many risks associated with people gathering together right now."
Events have been canceled left and right due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
The event's steering committee said it "truly believed that if any event could happen in a pandemic, it could be this one," but CC7D laid out reasons for the cancellation.
"The reality exists that hosting events of any size is now a risky venture in the face of the financial instability brought forth from COVID-19," the statement reads. "Furthermore, the fluidity in the rise of confirmed COVID-19 cases across Texas makes it extremely difficult to plan any event in the long-term. Guidelines and directives from counties and the state of Texas can change with little notice."
The festival committee is looking forward to planning future events.
"We would rather have our film community intact to gather together in 2021 than push forward to make CC7D happen in 2020."
