CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi Independent School District has decided to conduct only online instruction until Sept 4 this upcoming semester.
"Due to the continued spread of COVID-19 in the Corpus Christi area, Corpus Christi ISD will provide remote instruction to all students from the first day of school, Thursday, Aug. 13, through at least Friday, Sept. 4," said a release from the district.
The decision comes after Jim Hogg ISD, London ISD, and Alice ISD have made similar decisions.
“With increased flexibility being granted at the state level as well as support from local officials, we are able to take this measure in the interest of student and staff safety,” said Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez.
CCISD's technology department will be setting up remote teaching technology that they have been acquiring.
"Thanks to CCISD’s well-established Instructional Technology department, the district is prepared to offer substantive remote instruction," said the release. "The district has increased its inventory of mobile devices and hotspots, and will continue to do so to help support students in need."
Hernandez says they plan on rolling out the full plan soon and encourages the community to work together to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus in our community.
“It is imperative that everyone in Corpus Christi follow health guidelines so we can significantly reduce infection rates,” Hernandez said. “We know our students want to return to physical classrooms, and we will be ready to welcome them as soon as it is safe to do so.”
Online instruction will continue to be an option on Sept. 8, when in-person instruction is expected to begin.
The district has not yet made any announcements about the return of extracurricular activities at local schools.
