CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Last month, the Corpus Christi Independent School District started a free curbside meal pickup program for its students.
When the program started most schools were handing out anywhere between 60-80 meals a day.
Now several schools, like Miller High School, are handing out more than 200 meals a day.
“We are at 250 breakfast and lunch here at Miller; they're all different amounts. I think for the day it is 4,500 meals a day that are being prepped at our central kitchen,” Miller High School Cafeteria Manager Mary Lou Saldana said.
With many area school districts extending the cancellation of classes due to the onoing concerns over COVID-19, CCISD has also extended its free meal program for its students.
“I applaud our district leadership team in approving this process for our students and our families here in the district,” Miller High School Principal Dr. Bruce Wilson said.
As the district moves forward, the main concern is to continue to take care of its students.
“We started out with just offering lunch meals for students, and now we expanded to include breakfast and lunch," Wilson said. "Also making it more convenient and safer for families by allowing parents to drive up without having the children in the car with them."
Getting these meals to the students has been a daunting task, and it could not be done without a complete team effort.
“That is a team at each campus making this happen every day Monday through Friday. So, it is great leadership from the top down all the way from all of our cafeteria workers and all the way up,” said Wilson.
.Keeping the students fed is critical to their educational development, Saldana said.
“It makes us proud that we are essential workers and that we can help the community by serving our kids," Saldana said.
"That is what we work for, for them to eat their breakfast and lunch and be able to study and move forward."
The curbside free meal pickup program is available Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. through 1 p.m.
