Smaller crowds on local beaches

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Earlier this week, vehicles were restricted from entering Nueces County beaches.

Today, people still were hitting the waves, but crowds were a bit smaller than usual.

This video taken around noon at I.B. Magee Beach Park near the Horace Caldwell Pier showed the decrease in beach capacity.

Families had plenty of room to social distance because vehicles and golf carts were not allowed on the beach.

Everyone without a handicap placard had to park their cars nearby and walk to the beach or catch a ride.

We spoke with several out-of-towners who understand the restrictions are in an effort to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.

But not everyone is on board with not allowing golf carts on the beach.

“I'm kind of confused by it,” Port Aransas visitor Erika Torres said. “I guess I don't see the benefit of not having the golf carts out here.

“Because people are still allowed to go in there and I feel like being in a golf cart actually puts you more social distance from everybody else than if everybody's just walking."

We're also told many people cancelled their golf cart rentals ahead of this weekend when they learned about the restrictions.
