ROCKPORT, Texas — Aransas County officials held a meeting Wednesday to discuss the latest on the COVID-19 situation in the area.
Aransas County Judge C.H. “Burt” Mills Jr. says that Aransas County had 23 cases of COVID-19 as of 4 p.m. Tuesday. Seven people had recovered.
"We all know by social media and other sources that there are more," Mills said. "We can only report what the officials tell us from the state of Texas. They're a little slow, but we'll get it out there as fast as we can."
Mills also said beaches will remain open for the July 4th weekend and the fireworks show is still on schedule. The only way it could change is if Gov. Abbott were to issue a change.
Utilizing common sense will help get through the pandemic, Mills said.
"This weekend folks, we know what's coming," he said. "There's gonna be an influx of people coming from a lot of the hot spots around the state."
Officials are asking everyone to stay safe by social distancing, wearing a mask and by washing or sanitizing their hands.
Sandy Jumper, vice president of marketing and promotion with the Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce. said the fireworks display will be able to be seen for miles and that residents don't have to be at the beach to view the festivities.
There will also be a patriotic boat parade starting at noon. Boats will line up in Little Bay near the Key Allegro Marina area.
