ARANSAS PASS, Texas — City of Aransas Pass Code Enforcement officers have seen a spike in the illegal dumping of tires.
To help end this, code enforcement officers introduced the city to the Tire Take-Back Event. However, concerns with the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis have halted the event.
In Aransas Pass, resident Roy Vasquez is in the trenches, picking up several tires left in different parts of the city.
“One, it’s illegal; two, I mean, it just doesn’t beautify our town at all,” he said.
Vasquez is a volunteer with Keep Aransas Pass Beautiful. He drives around the city and works closely with code enforcement to collect and properly dispose of illegally dumped tires.
The tires can be an eyesore to many, and not good for the environment, he said, especially after rain events becuse the rainwter collects in the tires and attracts mosquitoes.
A Tire Take-Back Event can help get rid of these unwanted tires, but it also brings some challenges.
Aransas Pass Code Enforcement said it would take about $4,500 to haul off 8 tons of tires out of Aransas Pass.
Officers said they are working with area businesses and individuals who would be willing to help sponsor the Tire Take-Back Event.
In the meantime, Vasquez said he will continue to put his best forward and help keep Aransas Pass beautiful.
“I could tell they’re back at it -- areas that I have already cleared of tires have tires again,” he said.
