CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — There are plenty of ways you can get home safely if you have a few too many drinks while ringing in the New Year.
One local towing company is doing its part to keep the streets safe from drunk drivers this New Year’s Eve.
Apollo Towing Services says if you need a free ride, all it takes is a phone call and a little patience.
Like many other holidays, New Year's Eve is one of the biggest nights for intoxicated drivers to be on the road. To keep drivers safe, Apollo Towing Services is offering free rides home for those who live in Corpus Christi, Robstown, and Portland.
“We average about 35 tows each year for the last 10 years, and we are on pace this year to match that, if not surpass that. To date, as of yesterday, we have completed 26 no excuse tows, and we are very thankful that the community has gone out and had a plan and worked their plan and gotten themselves home safe and their vehicles home safe,” said Apollo Towing Services Vice President Michael Staff.
It will be all hands on deck for the crew at Apollo Towing Services, working 24/7 to help you get from point A to point B safely.
“And this program ends on January 1 at 6pm. So we are going to go through Wednesday evening at 6 and until then, we have all of our vehicles, all of our towers, and all of our dispatchers standing by for any services that the community would ask for,” said Staff.
The company says the rides are being offered on a first come, first served basis, and ask that you are patient as they plan for a lot of phone calls.
“Due to the fact that we have limited space in the cab of the tow truck, we are only taking the vehicle driver. You must have the keys, you can not get in an accident prior to the event, you must have an operable vehicle with the keys and confirmable address in Portland, Robstown, or Corpus Christi to get the free tow,” said Staff.
While there is no cost for a ride home, it will save you the cost of a DUI, especially if you or someone else is injured or killed because of an intoxicated driver's actions.
“There are dire consequences, the fines are in the tens of thousands, the jail time, the loss of license, the ignition switch to be installed in a car, the loss of work, loss of revenue, the increase in vehicle insurance SR22 is very expensive. You are pretty much in a bad position because you did not have a plan,” said Staff.
Callers need to keep in mind that the service excludes rides for passengers, is restricted to a one-way, one-time ride for the driver and the destination is limited.
