UPDATE: AEP officials say that an extended power outage could last until early Thursday for about 5,000 customers on the southside of Corpus Christi.

More than 14,600 customers in south Corpus Christi are without power after an outage was reported at about 2 p.m.

AEP spokesman Omar Lopez said the power outage is centered in the Yorktown/Cimarron area.

Corpus Christi police said the outage was caused by a fire at a transformer. AEP later confirmed that a transformer fire was the cause of the outage.

AEP reports the initial estimated time of restoration is 7 p.m., but that time could change.

Corpus Christi Independent School District facilities in the area closed shortly after the outage.

And the Garcia Library at 5930 Brockhampton St. has been closed until further notice because of the outage, the city announced. Library staff asks patrons to call 361-826-7055 to confirm if the facility has reopened.
