Dozens of green sea turtles washing ashore at unusual time

It’s the peak time for turtle nesting season, bringing endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles into our area.

But that doesn’t explain why dozens of green sea turtles are being found.

We’re visiting the Padre Island National Seashore today, where we’re talking to Dr. Donna Shaver about what’s causing these green sea turtles to wash up.

Shaver oversees the Sea Turtle Science and Recovery Department for PINS. She’s studied sea turtles for more than 30 years and she says she’s never seen this many turtles needing to be rescued, during this time of the year.

Shaver explains what weather conditions are causing this and what you can do if you come across a turtle.

We’ll have more later today on KRIS 6 News.
